The valley
Swannanoa, North Carolina
The Cherokee word the valley is named for means beautiful river. Fifteen minutes east of Asheville, far enough out that you hear turkeys instead of traffic.
What it is
Swannanoa is an unincorporated community in eastern Buncombe County, strung along the US 70 corridor between Asheville and Black Mountain. It grew up on farming and textiles — the old Beacon Blanket mill gave Beacon Village its name — and it is home to Warren Wilson College, whose farm and forest sit right in the valley.
MountainTrue's Appalachian Design Center describes the people here as diverse and working-class, with “a strong, close-knit sense of neighborly identity.” That is the part you cannot photograph, and it is the part everyone who lives here mentions first.
Fifteen minutes either way
Asheville, without living in it
The restaurants, the music, the galleries, the airport, Mission Hospital — all a short drive west, and none of it outside your window at eleven at night. You get the city on the days you want it.
The mountains, out the back door
The Blue Ridge Parkway, Black Mountain, the Pisgah trails and the Swannanoa River are all on the doorstep. This house looks over a fenced yard to the trees, with seasonal mountain views from upstairs.
A thousand acres across the road
Beyond the neighbouring lot is a tract of roughly a thousand acres held by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, whose Cove training centre covers some 1,200 acres of these hills. What that means from the driveway is simple: the view across the road is woods, and it is not going to become a subdivision.
Swannanoa is coming back
Helene hit this valley hard in September 2024. What has happened since is the reason people are moving here rather than away: a community that decided, out loud and together, to rebuild.
The clearest sign is going up on the old Beacon Blanket factory site. Beacon Park — led by the Beacon Foundation, whose founder Casey Watkins is the grandson of mill workers — will be a public outdoor park built around a Velosolutions pumptrack expected to be the largest in North and South America, with bouldering walls, a mile of walking path, playgrounds, green space and an event lawn for four thousand people. It is designed to be ridden by skateboarders, rollerbladers and adaptive bikes too. A $4.5 million grant from the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority in 2025 pulled the timeline forward: a soft launch is planned by the end of 2026, with the grand opening in spring 2027.
The other sign is groceries. Ingles is rebuilding on US 70 — demolition of the storm-damaged buildings began in January 2026, and the replacement is a 105,000 sq ft store with two more tenants, a fuel station and a wash, expected to employ 200 to 220 people. In the meantime The Rite Buy Grocery is open in downtown Beacon Village, stocking locally grown and produced food.

A valley that has been through what this one has does not pretend otherwise.
